Privacy Evaluation for CK-12

Last updated April 24, 2020

CK-12 is an online application dedicated to increasing access to high-quality educational materials for K-12 students all over the world. For safety, CK-12's policy notes that your first name and your general profile will be public for other CK-12 users to see, but not your last name, email address, birth date, and your login password. CK-12's policy promises they do not knowingly share or sell your personal information with third parties for their direct marketing use. To access all of CK-12's features, a registered account that is password protected is required. CK-12 states in their policy they recognize the need to provide additional privacy protection for children on the CK-12 platform and to register a user must be 13 years or older, or if under 13 years of age, they must get consent from their parent, guardian, or teacher.

CK-12 can be accessed through its website. The Privacy Policy and Terms of Use used for this evaluation can be found on CK-12’s website. This evaluation only considers policies that have been made publicly available prior to an individual using the application or service.

The terms of CK-12 state that all user postings will automatically be linked to their username and profile, and will be visible to others in connection with any postings.

CK-12 terms state they collect personal information such as first and last name, telephone number, email address, mailing address, birth date, profile photo. CK-12 terms say they may share a user's personal information with their service providers who need to access that information in order to provide support, maintenance, or other services for the operation or improvement of the CK-12 platform. CK-12 states they take steps to ensure that service providers comply with their privacy policy, and limit their use of personal information solely to the purposes for which it was disclosed, and do not make any further disclosures to others. Additionally, CK-12 promises they do not knowingly sell or share personal information with third parties for their direct marketing use.

CK-12 provides a privacy policy that notes that CK-12 maintains a comprehensive security program that is reasonably designed to protect the security, privacy, confidentiality, and integrity of personal information against risks such as unauthorized access or use, or unintended or inappropriate disclosure. The policy provides that by registering as a member or otherwise providing CK-12 with an email address, CK-12 may send users important administrative messages, such as security breach notices required by law.

CK-12's policy states they recognize the need to provide additional privacy protections for children and to register a child must be 13 years or older. If a child is under the age of 13, CK-12's policy says they must get consent from their parent, guardian, or teacher. Additionally, CK-12 states they take appropriate steps to obtain parental or guardian consent prior to collecting personal information from children under 13. Lastly, CK-12's policy says they allow users to update, correct, or delete their personally identifiable information and a user may edit their account information at any time by logging into their account profile and updating their information. CK-12's policy also states that they are a signatory of the Student Privacy Pledge ("SPP").

Our core evaluation criteria will always be freely available. People are encouraged to read the questions we use and our information security primer.
