Overview

Signal Messenger is a free communication app that lets users send and receive private high-fidelity messages, participate in HD voice/video calls, and explore a growing set of new features that help users stay connected with friends and family. Signal's terms say calls and messages between users are always encrypted, so they can never be shared or viewed by anyone but the user and the intended recipients. However, use of the messaging service may allow personal information or content to be made publicly visible to others by the intended recipient. Signal's terms say they collect personal information such as telephone number and no other information is collected when users use the service. However, the terms do not disclose whether Signal can sell personal information to third parties, display targeted advertisements to users, or track users on other apps or services across the internet.

Signal's terms say they take reasonable steps to protect the confidentiality and security of personal information collected from users of the service. The terms also say Signal utilizes state-of-the-art security and end-to-end encryption to provide private messaging, Internet calling, and other services to users worldwide. Lastly, the terms of Signal say users must be at least 13 years old to use the services.

Signal can be accessed through its website, and is available for download at the iOS App Store, and the Google Play Store. The Privacy Policy used for this evaluation can be found on Signal’s website, iOS App Store, and the Google Play Store. This evaluation only considers policies that have been made publicly available prior to an individual using the application or service.
