App Overview

ClassDojo connects teachers with students and parents to build amazing classroom communities. ClassDojo has multiple safeguards in place to allow for safe usage of its application with sound privacy and security practices. The vendor’s data deletion policies are robust, and allow parents access to their children's data via parent accounts, and contacting ClassDojo directly. ClassDojo is also very clear in their terms about how they use and protect student information, and when they use de-identified and aggregate data. They provide clear guidelines for parents and schools to help ensure compliance with COPPA and FERPA. However, these safeguards can potentially be undercut by how teachers use the application. For example, if a teacher uses student's real names, and then displays a class view where it is publicly visible, that could potentially run afoul of community expectations of privacy. Schools and teachers should consider these privacy issues as they set up the service, and train teachers in its use.

ClassDojo can be used in many different ways in the classroom, and these different uses all pose different levels of potential privacy concerns. The way teachers structure names, the specific behaviors that they track, and what type of messages they share about the class all affect the sensitivity of data stored in and shared via the application. Additionally, teacher practice (such as displaying lists of student behavior via a projector in the classroom) can cause different types of potential privacy issues.

The terms are clear that student data will not be used for targeting advertisements to students, or creating profiles that are used for non-educational purposes. In addition, de-identified and/or aggregate student data can be used for research, product improvement, or developing marketing materials. ClassDojo also limits the data they collect to only what is required to provide its service. Teachers should be aware that the mobile app will request access to their contacts if they invite other people to the app, and request their location information.

Based on the terms, ClassDojo takes steps to create a secure environment for storing and passing data. According to their terms, they encrypt data while n transit between the web site, all mobile apps, and the ClassDojo servers. Additionally, ClassDojo describes several procedures they use to prevent unauthorized physical access to their infrastructure. As a final step, ClassDojo appears to conduct ongoing reviews of internal processes that could potentially lead to data breaches.
