Privacy Evaluation for Dropbox
Overview
Dropbox is a tool for storing, organizing, and sharing information -- documents, links, photos, and more -- which can then be accessed from multiple devices. The terms of Dropbox say that users can choose to share files with specific other people with whom they can collaborate and interact, and that basic user information, such as name and email address, will be visible to those people. According to the terms, the vendor collects personally identifiable information when users sign up for an account. The terms say that information collected is used to provide, improve, and promote their service, and that information is shared with third parties for the purposes of the service. The terms also say that Dropbox takes responsibility for the actions and omissions of its third-party subcontractors and sub-processors.
The terms further say that Dropbox does not sell personal information to advertisers or other third parties. However, the terms say that Dropbox may display targeted advertisements to users and track users on other apps and services across the internet for advertising purposes. The terms say that each Dropbox account has an email address associated with it, and that Dropbox Business teams can create managed account hierarchies. The terms further say that Dropbox uses reasonable security standards, including encryption of files at rest, to keep data secure, but do not mention encryption in transit. The terms clearly say that users can upload content to the product and that users can access, modify, or delete their personal information from their account. Finally, the terms say that the product is not intended for use by children under 13.
Dropbox can be accessed through its website, and is available for download at the iOS App Store, and the Google Play Store.
