Privacy Evaluation for Flip

Last updated

Overview

Flip is a multimedia platform owned by Microsoft, Inc., where Teachers and “Leads” facilitate groups in which students can respond and interact through audio, video, and text. Students are invited to the groups through a Lead or Co-Lead, who manage the users, content, and interactions.

Flip can be accessed through its website, and is available for download at the iOS App Store, and the Google Play Store. The Privacy Policy and Terms of Use used for this evaluation can be found on Flip’s website. Additionally, other policies used for this evaluation include: Privacy & Security Commitments to Schools. This evaluation only considers policies that have been made publicly available prior to an individual using the application or service.

Safety

Users of the service interact via permissions set by Teachers and Leads, and Flip's policy says that Leads are responsible for managing the behavior and interactions of their student members. Depending on permissions set by Leads, the terms are clear about the possibility that users will be able to interact with other users outside the group if content links are shared. Flip is not able to control or monitor all personal information or content children and students may submit to the service because users are able to share their content outside of the group or topic to which it was submitted. The terms also say that Flip maintains the right, but not the obligation to monitor user content, because Leads are primarily responsible for monitoring and moderating content.

Privacy

According to the policy, Flip collects personally identifiable information from Teachers when they create accounts for their students and when users post content on the service. The terms say Flip may collect personal information such as first name, last name, date of birth, email address, geographic location, and audio and image included within a video. Automatically collected information may include device and usage information as well as information collected automatically for data analytics. In terms of sharing information, Flip’s policy says that the company shares users’ personal information with vendors, consultants, and other third-party service providers who help provide the services.

The terms say Flip does not sell users' information to third parties, and Flip does not send third-party marketing communications, does not display targeted advertisements, and does not track users for commercial purposes. Flip also does not use personal information to market or advertise non-Flip products or services to users, but teachers may receive information about Microsoft or Flip products, services, and events, new Flip features and other news and information.

Security

Flip's policy says they use reasonable security technologies and procedures to help protect users’ personal information, which also includes encryption of data that is transferred or stored. In addition, the terms say users will be notified in the event of a data breach and the policy indicates that the company takes steps to ensure user information is secure and that their security practices and controls are validated through routine third-party penetration and vulnerability assessments.

Compliance

According to the policy, Flip is intended for use by students, including children under the age of 13, as long as the school obtains verifiable parental consent. The policy says that school leads are able to provide consent on behalf of parents or legal guardians when they enroll students on the service. School leads are meant to manage student users and monitor content as well as ensure that students comply with the code of conduct specified in the policies. Lastly, teachers are responsible for student user content and are required to respond to any questions from students or their parents about accessing, modifying, or deleting student user content.
