Privacy Evaluation for Prodigy
Overview
Prodigy is an online service with Math and English based learning games for students, which can be accessed in the classroom or at home. Prodigy's policy says they collect personal information from students, but limit the collection of information to only what is necessary to use the product. The policy says while the games permit student users to send messages to each other, students are unable to send personal information using the messaging function. Messages that students send to each other in the game must be selected from a predetermined list by a parent or educator.
The policy says Prodigy does not sell data of students to third parties, and Prodigy does not track, create advertising profiles, or display targeted advertisements to any students. In addition, the policy says Prodigy maintains reasonable standards of data security and protection including firewalls, encryption, and physical access controls. However, the policy does not disclose whether Prodigy provides notice to users in the event of a data breach. Lastly, the policy says parental consent is obtained through linking student accounts to one or more parents or educators.
Prodigy can be accessed through its website, and is available for download at the iOS App Store, and the Google Play Store. The Privacy Policy for Students and Terms of Use were used for this evaluation.
